What Your Car's Warning Lights Actually Mean

Dashboard warning lights are a colour-coded language most drivers half-know. The consequences of misreading them run from a wasted trip to a destroyed engine, and the underlying system is actually simple once someone explains it.
The colour tells you the urgency
Almost every warning light on almost every car follows traffic-light logic:
- Red means stop safely as soon as you can. Something is wrong that can damage the car or endanger you.
- Amber or yellow means a fault has been detected and needs attention soon, but you are generally able to drive on carefully.
- Green or blue is information. A system is active. Nothing is wrong.
If you remember nothing else, remember that red means pull over. The instinct to press on to somewhere more convenient is what turns most red-light events into expensive ones.
The red lights that mean stop immediately
Oil pressure, usually an oil-can symbol. This is the most urgent light on the car. It does not mean you are low on oil; it means oil is not being pumped around the engine at pressure. An engine running without oil pressure destroys its bearings within minutes. Stop, switch off, and do not restart to move it a little further.
Engine temperature, a thermometer over waves. The engine is overheating. Follow the steps in the summer checklist: AC off, heater on full, pull over, switch off, and wait before opening anything.
Battery or charging, a battery symbol. The alternator is not charging. The engine will keep running on battery reserve for a while and then stop entirely, quite possibly at a junction. Switch off every non-essential electrical load and drive directly somewhere useful, or stop and call for help.
Brake system, often an exclamation mark in a circle. Check first that the handbrake is fully released, which accounts for a fair share of these. If it stays on with the handbrake down, it can mean low brake fluid or a hydraulic fault. Treat a brake warning with a pedal that feels different as a stop-now situation.
The amber lights that mean book a garage
Check engine, an engine outline, is the most misunderstood light on any dashboard. It covers hundreds of possible fault codes, from a loose fuel cap to a failing sensor to a genuine misfire. A steady amber check-engine light means get it read soon. A flashing check-engine light is different and more serious: it usually indicates a misfire dumping unburnt fuel into the exhaust, which can destroy a catalytic converter in a short distance. Reduce speed and get it looked at promptly.
Getting the code read is cheap, and any workshop with a scan tool can do it in minutes. The code narrows the problem enormously and stops you paying for guesswork.
ABS means the anti-lock system has faulted. Your ordinary brakes still work, but you have lost anti-lock function, so avoid heavy braking on loose or wet surfaces where a wheel could lock.
Airbag or SRS means the restraint system has detected a fault. The car drives normally, but the airbags may not deploy in a collision. That is a significant thing to leave unresolved.
Tyre pressure means at least one tyre is significantly low. Check all four with a gauge rather than by eye, because a tyre can be dangerously soft and still look normal.
Traction or stability control flashing while driving is not a fault at all: it means the system is actively working because a wheel is slipping. Steady illumination is different and indicates the system is disabled or faulty.
Diesel-specific lights
Glow plug, a coil symbol, is normal at start-up in cold weather and goes out after a few seconds. Staying on or flashing while driving indicates a fault.
Diesel particulate filter indicates the filter is clogging and needs a regeneration cycle, which requires a sustained run at higher speed rather than more city crawling. Ignoring it repeatedly leads to a blocked filter and a genuinely expensive replacement. If this light appears often, your driving pattern may simply not suit a diesel.
What to do when one appears
Note the colour first, because that sets your response. Then note whether the car feels or sounds different, whether the light is steady or flashing, and what you were doing when it came on. That last detail is more diagnostically useful than people expect, and it is the first thing a good technician will ask.
Resist the urge to clear the code and carry on. Clearing a fault code without fixing the fault removes the evidence and, on many systems, also erases the freeze-frame data that records exactly what the engine was doing when the fault occurred. That data is often what makes an intermittent fault findable.
A light that is not on can also be wrong
When you turn the ignition on, most warning lights should illuminate briefly as a self-test and then go out once the engine starts. If a light never comes on at all during that check, the bulb or the circuit may have failed, and you have lost the warning entirely.
This is occasionally deliberate. A removed airbag or ABS bulb is a known trick on used cars for hiding a fault that would otherwise be obvious. Watching the dashboard during the self-test takes three seconds and is worth doing when inspecting any car you are thinking of buying.
