Summer Car Care Checklist

Indian summers are among the harshest environments a mass-market car is asked to operate in. Sustained ambient temperatures above forty degrees stress the cooling system, age the battery, raise tyre pressures and demand continuous work from an air conditioning system that may have been idle for months.
Most summer breakdowns are preventable, and the checks take an afternoon.
Cooling system first
This is the one that strands people, and it is the one nobody checks. With the engine completely cold, look at the coolant level in the expansion tank; it should sit between the minimum and maximum marks. If it is low, that is not a reason to simply top it up and move on, because coolant is in a sealed system and a low level means it went somewhere.
Look at the colour too. Coolant should be brightly coloured and translucent. Brown, rusty or cloudy coolant means the corrosion inhibitors have been exhausted and the system needs flushing, which is a cheap job compared with a corroded radiator or a failed water pump.
Squeeze the radiator hoses when cold. They should feel firm and springy. Hoses that are hard and brittle, or soft and spongy, are near the end of their life, and a hose that lets go on the highway in June empties the cooling system in under a minute.
Finally, look at the front of the radiator and condenser through the grille. They collect leaves, plastic bags and insects, and a blocked core cannot shed heat regardless of how healthy everything behind it is.
Never open the radiator or expansion tank cap on a hot engine. The system is pressurised, and releasing that pressure causes the coolant to flash to steam and erupt. This causes serious burns every year.
The battery is on borrowed time
Heat is harder on a battery than cold is. Cold reduces the current a battery can deliver, which is why failures become obvious in winter, but heat is what actually destroys it, by accelerating the internal corrosion and fluid loss that kill the plates. A battery that might last six years in a temperate climate often gives up around four here.
If yours is more than three years old, have it load-tested before summer rather than after it fails. Testing is quick and most workshops will do it while you wait. Clean any white or blue crust off the terminals, since corroded terminals imitate a failing battery, and check that the hold-down bracket is tight, because vibration shortens battery life.
Air conditioning
Run it before you need it. An AC that has been unused all winter often reveals a problem on the first hot day, which is the worst time to discover it and the busiest time for workshops.
The cheapest thing to check is the cabin filter. A clogged filter chokes airflow and makes a perfectly healthy system feel weak, and it is the usual reason an AC smells musty. Replacing it costs a fraction of any actual repair.
If cooling is genuinely poor, resist the reflex to simply have gas added. Automotive AC is a sealed loop and refrigerant is not consumed; a system low on gas has a leak, and a refill without a leak test is a fix with an expiry date. Ask for a dye or sniffer test to find the actual fault.
Tyres in the heat
Air expands when hot, so pressures rise several PSI on a hot road. Do not bleed air out to compensate: the recommended figure is a cold pressure, and letting air out to reach it when hot leaves you badly underinflated once things cool down.
Underinflation matters more in summer than at any other time. A soft tyre flexes, flexing generates heat, and heat on top of a fifty-degree road surface is how sidewalls fail. Check pressures cold, keep them correct, and inspect for sidewall cracking, which heat and UV accelerate.
Fluids, wipers and glass
Check engine oil level, brake fluid and washer fluid. Heat thins oil, so an engine that is marginally low is working with less margin than it appears.
Wiper blades harden and crack under UV, and summer is when they die. A blade that smears or chatters will be useless in the first storm, so replace them before the season turns rather than during it.
Protecting the interior
A car parked in direct sun can exceed sixty degrees inside, which cracks dashboards, fades trim and dries out leather. A folding windscreen shade is genuinely effective. Cracking the windows a few millimetres where it is safe to do so allows some airflow and reduces the peak.
Do not leave aerosols, lighters, phones, power banks or spectacles in a parked car in summer. Lithium cells in particular do not tolerate that environment, and a swollen power bank on a dashboard is a real fire risk rather than a theoretical one.
If the temperature gauge climbs
This is the situation where doing the right thing quickly saves an engine. If the gauge moves toward the red or a warning light appears:
- Switch the air conditioning off immediately, which removes a significant heat load.
- Turn the cabin heater on to maximum with the blower high. It is deeply unpleasant, but the heater core is a small radiator and it genuinely pulls heat out of the engine.
- Pull over somewhere safe as soon as you can and switch the engine off.
- Do not open the bonnet immediately if there is steam, and do not touch the radiator cap.
- Wait at least thirty minutes before investigating anything.
Continuing to drive an overheating engine is what turns a failed hose or a leaking radiator into a warped cylinder head and a rebuild. The difference between stopping immediately and pressing on for another five kilometres is frequently the difference between a few thousand rupees and a few lakh.
Before a long summer drive
Check coolant, oil, all four tyre pressures plus the spare, wipers, washer fluid and every exterior light. Carry drinking water, sufficient for the people in the car and a little for the radiator. Plan stops. Engines and tyres both appreciate a break, and so does the driver.
